Renewable Energy for Resilient Agri-food System (RERAS) project, led by UNDP and funded by Royal Norwegian Embassy, is being implemented in 11 municipalities of Sudurpashchim, Karnali and Bagmati Provinces (four in Karnali, six in Sudurpashchim and one in Bagmati) in collaboration with the local governments, and partnership with Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC), International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), World Food Programme (WFP) and other local organizations working on sustainable agriculture, and food security and nutrition. The working municipalities are Triveni, Budiganda, Budinanda, Swamikartik, Jaganath and Himali from Bajura; Tatopani, Chandanath and Patarasi from Jumla; Khatyad from Mugu; and Sunkoshi from Sindhuli districts. . This project aims to increase agricultural productivity, and ensure food and nutritional security by enhancing the use of reliable and affordable renewable energy solutions for production, irrigation, processing, storing, packaging, and marketing of locally grown crop products.
The project mainly focuses on linking renewable energy solutions to the agri-food system that will help reduce the cost of production and increase the local food supply. This in turn will support economic empowerment of women and marginalized groups, and attract youths to the agriculture sector by engaging them in agri-business, thereby creating local employment and contributing to the environment. Furthermore, this project will also help in establishing dedicated funds at local level to support the farmers for the use of modern technology in production and post harvest handling including processing. The project will also work with local and provincial governments, cooperatives, traders, and service providers to enhance their knowledge on use of modern technology for food production and sustainable food system management through capacity building and provisions of climate information, policies, finance, and action research and demonstration.
