“Strengthening adaptive and inclusive food systems to improve food security and climate resilience in South Asia” is a regional initiative implemented in Nepal, India, and Bangladesh, with technical support from Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and funding from the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). In Nepal, LI-BIRD serves as the national advocacy and implementing partner in Karnali Province, while SABAL Nepal serves as the implementing partner in the Madhesh Province. The project is currently in Phase III, with a strong focus on strengthening multi-sectoral coordination mechanisms for nutrition-sensitive governance. It promotes community-based, multisectoral approaches to mainstream nutrition across key sectors.
The main objective of the project is to improve food and nutrition security of vulnerable and food-insecure communities through a multi-level, system-based approach that integrates nutrition, climate resilience, and economic empowerment. It strengthens cooperation across local, provincial, and national levels and builds the capacities of key local stakeholders, including local governments, smallholder farmers, producer groups, and local entrepreneurs.
The project focuses on four key components:
- Nutrition literacy and education to promote healthy diets and improved nutrition practices
- Food and nutrition governance through participatory planning and resource allocation
- Sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture using agroecological approaches
- Equitable livelihoods, particularly for women and youth, through local value creation and social protection
By embedding evidence-based and participatory approaches into local development and governance processes, NSC-III aims to translate national strategies and global food and nutrition security commitments into practical, locally driven actions. Overall, NSC strengthens nutrition-sensitive governance and supports inclusive development planning, contributing to long-term, systemic transformation of food systems.
