Nurturing Young Minds with Local Flavors

Connecting children with healthy diets starts with what’s on their plates.  On 29th July 2026 (13th Shrawan 2083), the Better Nutrition Project, supported by the European Unionin Nepal and implemented by LI-BIRD in close coordination with Budhinanda Municipality, hosted an engaging School-Level Local and Indigenous Food Demonstration at Budhinanda Basic School in Kolti, Bajura. 

It was an interactive learning event with 161 participants, including 127 young students (ECD Grade 5), teachers, parents, and municipal representatives. 

Through six engaging thematic stalls, participants learned about dietary diversity, with a focus on: 

  • Cereals & Tubers 
  • Pulses 
  • Green Leafy Vegetables & Yellow Fruits 
  • Animal-Source Foods 
  • WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) 
  • Balanced nutrition late 

Students and parents were keen to observe and learn about traditional, nutrient-dense dishes like Foxtail Millet Pudding (Kaguno ko Kheer), Millet Bread (Kodo ko Roti), and Buckwheat Pancake (Fapar Mada). Through hands-on demonstrations, everyone took home key lessons on food hygiene, balanced meals, and the rich value of our indigenous food systems. School Principal Ms. Sita Singh shared her gratitude, noting that this first-of-its-kind event at the school, which would play a crucial role in building lasting nutrition awareness across the whole community.
