ECOTOPIA Nepal: Agroecology Transition Initiative in Nepal is implemented by LI-BIRD in partnership with local governments, farmer groups, cooperatives, civil society organisations (CSOs), and agroecology networks. The project is funded by DKA Austria and aims to contribute to Nepal’s transition towards an agroecology-based, resilient, and equitable food system through collaborative efforts, knowledge co-creation, and strengthened multi-stakeholder engagement.

The project is being implemented in selected sites across Gandaki and Bagmati provinces, including Annapurna Rural Municipality (Ward 3) and Rupa Rural Municipality (Ward 7) in Kaski district, as well as Sunkoshi Rural Municipality (Ward 2) and Godawari Municipality (Ward 6) in Bagmati province. In addition, national-level engagement is ensured through activities such as the Agroecology Advocacy Workshop and the establishment of a Community of Practice (CoP).

During this six-month inception phase, the project focuses on refining participatory food system assessment methodologies and conducting preliminary assessments in selected communities. Through engagement with farmers, local governments, and key stakeholders, the initiative promotes knowledge co-creation, capacity building, and inclusive planning. It also supports the rollout of Nepal’s Agroecology Roadmap by organising advocacy workshops and establishing a Community of Practice (CoP) to strengthen collaboration, dialogue, and collective action. The project will generate evidence, identify key actors, and build local ownership to enable effective scaling of agroecology in subsequent phases.
