“The Green Evolution: Pathways to Food Systems Transformation” is a multi-country project being implemented in Nepal, India (lead), and Bangladesh with technical support from Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and funding support from German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The project aims to contribute to robust local food systems that safeguard people’s right to safe healthy food, promote food sovereignty for local communities, and build up resilience to climate change (SDG goal #2).
The working approach of the project is developing agroecological climate-resilient models and evidence at the local level, using that evidence to train the extension services through government and academic institutions, and disseminating the evidence for improved policy and institutional framework which ultimately results in increased global progress towards adopting agroecological principles to foster food system transformation. Hence, the project will support the government in implementing national pathways toward equitable, responsible, and sustainable local food systems, through improved policy frameworks, operational structures, and multi-stakeholder cooperation at all levels (local, provincial and national).
In Nepal, the project is being implemented in the Surkhet, Dailekh, and Jumla districts of Karnali province. It is implemented by Local Initiatives for Biodiversity, Research, and Development (LI-BIRD) in collaboration with the Himalayan Permaculture Centre (HPC) (Social Mobilisation) and Asia Network for Sustainable Agriculture and Bioresources (ANSAB) (Knowledge Partner) from April 2024- March 2028. The project will directly work with smallholder farmers (5000), government extension workers (600), academicians, students (200), agroecology value chain actors, and civil society organizations.
