Why were they awarded?

  •  Significantly contributed to develope maize varieties viz. Resunga composit, Gulmi-2 etc through participatory plant breeding approach.
  • Disseminating new maize varieties through community based seed production and marketing.
  • Actively involved in rice bean trial management.
  • Well organized farmer group and involving in empowering other farmers group.

 


2008

Name of Group: Chandra Ghar Bagaincha

Address: Taratal, Bardia


Chandra women home garden group is one of emerging farmers group in Taratal, Bardia district. The group is composed of 11 members with mixed ethnicity (Tharu, Gurung, Magar, Dalits) groups. The group has contributed in promotion of integrated home gardens for family well being of resource poor and disadvantaged groups in the project village including adjoining villages. They have taken several good initiatives in their community for the last 3 years. This includes: public waste land management for community benefits and coordination and linkage with service providers for community development. The group took initiative in best utilizing the public waste land by developing it as community fish pond. This is becoming a good learning and practice for other farmers. The group members were successful to earn 6500 and 1000 (Nepalese Rupees) from community fish farming and community vegetable farming respectively. Besides the regular project activities, the group is taking lead in generating resources for small irrigation through coordination and linkage with DADOs, Bardia. LI-BIRD has recognized the contribution of this group in biodiversity and natural resource management for the livelihood of marginalized communities by providing Best Innovative Farmers Group Award. This award is established by LI-BIRD in 2005.


2007  

Name of Group: Varpola Women Group

Address: Varpola, Kaski

Varpola women group is one of the fast-growing and innovative groups in Kaski District. The group was formed by promising and energetic women from socially disadvantaged community.

They have leased 15 ropani (0.75 ha) land and developed it as an organic farm, as well as a learning centre. They conduct various experiments on ginger, taro, sweet potato and determine suitable species and farming technologies. Group members then apply the learning to their own land.

These days farmers from various places visit their farm. Group members share their experience and knowledge with other farmers. They  plan to develop their farm as farmer's school and tourist destination in the near future.

  • Has contributed in conservation and protection of  wetland biodiversity
  • Has provided equal priority for watershade area
  • Has mobilized 323 households
  • Has formed scholarship for students from Jalari community.
  • Has provided support for local school
  • Has been emerging as self sustainable group

  • Has substantially contributed in in-situ conservation project activities
  • Has promoted Community Based Seed bank for on farm conservation
  • Has collected endangered rice landraces from 3 districts, Bara, Parsa and Rautahat.
  • Has provided easy access of local seed to poor farmers
  • Has seeked resources from other institutions like VDC and Using Diversity Award
  • Has good fund mobilization and has made community biodioversity management fund functional.
