Linking home garden in inclusive development programme for contributing in securing livelihood of resource poor and DAGs in Nepal: Home garden project, Phase-III

Goal : Improved health and decreased economic vulnerability of poor and disadvantaged groups

Expected outcomes and outputs

Outcome 1: Small holders and DAG families adopt home garden for improved nutrition through diversified dietary source

Outcome 2: District and national level partners adopted home garden policies in their programme and respond to the demands from home garden groups

 Outputs:        

  • Home garden farmers increased diversity of home garden products and are aware of species of nutritional value ·        
  • Home garden farmers are aware of the productivity potential of their surplus products ·        
  • Members of disadvantaged groups are involved in decision making of home garden groups and adopt inclusive group governance·        
  • DADOs make especial plans and programmes for promotion of home garden activities ·        
  • Local Resource Persons (LRPs) trained and mobilised by DADOs have expertise to promote home garden ·        
  • Local government bodies ensures inclusion of home garden promotion plans in VDC planning ·        
  • Department of Agriculture (DOA) are aware of importance of home garden element for small holders and DAG farmers

Major components of the phase III

  • i.     Promotion of home garden based biodiversity management
  • ii.    Maximization of income potential from home garden based enterprises
  • iii.   Supporting community through strengthening informal home garden seed system
  • iv.   Capacity building and institution strengthening of DAGs and farmer groups
  • v.    Coordination with SDC projects to maximize synergy and livelihood potential
  • vi.   Technical backstopping to partners (DoA) to institutionalize home garden aproach
  • vii.  Wider sharing of experiences through knowledge management

 Project approach and working modalities

  • i.      Inclusive targeting and group governance coaching
  • ii.     Right based approach to development (rights to services and rights to resources for livelihoods)
  • iii.    Strengthening community based institution and mechanisms for home garden promotion and sustainable access to inputs and services
  • iv.    Empowerment of DAGs and building their voice through social mobilisation, organization, capacity building
  • v.     Integrated approach and establishing connectivity (especially at SDC cluster)
  • vi.    Strategic partnership with local and other service providers   

Geographical coverage: Ilam, Jhapa, Ramechap, Gulmi, Rupendehi, Bardia, Kailali, Kanchanpur and Khotang.

Implemented in collaboration with different partner organizations:TUKI ( Dolakha, Sindhupalchowk), SAHAS Nepal (Okhaldhunga) and CEAPREAD (Kavre, Baitadi, Dadeldhura and Surkhet).

Other Collaborators : Farmers, Farmers’ Groups, CBOs, DADOs.
