Community-Based Biodiversity Management South Asia Programme

Objective : To strengthen capacity of farming communities in South Asia to conserve, utilize and benefit from their genetic resources through appropriate technical support, institutional mechanisms and policy interventions.

Specific Objectives :

  • To enable farming communities to document, conserve and utilize their genetic resources and associated knowledge in a sustainable manner.
  • To strengthen capacity of farmers and farming communities, local institutions and other stakeholders for conservation and sustainable utilisation of genetic resources.
  • To establish institutional mechanisms to organize and protect farmers’ rights and secure access and control over their genetic resources.
  • To analyze implication of existing policies and laws for conservation of genetic resources and promotion of supportive policy environment.
  • To promote exchange of knowledge, experiences and genetic resources among organisations and farming communities of South Asia.

  • Scoping study to identify potential organisations with experience and interest to collaborate in the project.
  • Potential organisation preparing a country status report on the conservation and utilisation of biodiversity in their respective countries.
  • Partnership and project conceptualisation workshop in Nepal for South Asian partners.
  • Preparation of the South Asian "Community–based Biodiversity Management South Asia (CBM-SA)” project proposal
  • Develop modalities for implementation, coordination and management of project activities, both in-country and regional.
  • Initiate South Asia network of NGOs with interest and capacity for implementation of CBM-SA project in their respective countries.
  • Document and share good practices on CBM being practised in South Asia and build on this for further promotion of CBM approach for biodiversity conservation in the region.
  • Organise capacity building programme to enable partner organisations in developing and implementing CBM-SA programme in their respective countries.
  • Fund searching and creating donor consortium as necessary.

 Geographical Coverage : Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Tibet-China.

Collaborators : Green Foundation, India; Green Movement of Srilanka, Srilanka, UBINING, Bangladesh; TAAAS, Tibet-China.

Duration : December 2012 to 2016
