2008Name of winner: Ms. Sukmaya Chepang Address: Chhimkeswari, Tahanun Ms. Chepang is from Rasauli Village in Chimkeswori VDC of Tanahun district. She was actively involved as a research farmer in developing technologies for sloping and shifting cultivation areas since 2001. In the last few years, she contributed in demonstrating innovative ideas and process in hedgerow species selection and domestication of wild foods. She also disseminated the integrated hedgerow technology and knowledge to adjoining communities as a resource person. She was acknowledged by Best Innovative Female Farmer Award 2008 for her outstanding contribution in promotion of hedgerow technology for the improvement of livelihoods of communities dependent on shifting and sloping land. This award is established by Dr. Balaram Thapa and Ms. Narmada Thapa, founder members of LI-BIRD. 2007Name of winner: Ms Maya Kumal Address: With project support, Ms Maya Kumal enhanced her knowledge and managerial skills on home garden. She has maintained 60 species diversity in her home gardens and initiated to conserve local varieties of crops (beans). Integrated kitchen fish pond, poultry, mushroom farming and nursery raising around the small homestead are the central attraction of her home garden. She Was able to convert a shape less homestead area into a resourceful home garden. Devotion, hard work and confidence are the secrets of her success. LIBIRD has recognized her outstanding performance and contribution in promotion of home gardens for quality livelihood enhancement and honored her “Innovative Female Farmer Award, 2007.” Ms Kumal was selected out of more than 60,000 Households with whom LI-BIRD is working directly through different projects in Nepal. With confidence from her two years of experiences, she invested the award money to buy a piglet and integrated it into her home garden enterprise. She is now a role model in the village as her success is motivating other members of the community to improve of their home gardens.
