LI-BIRD has been working in different parts of Nepal with various ethnic groups. The focus of its activities has been farming communities, particularly poor farmers. During the last few years, LI-BIRD has worked with various farmers groups and cooperatives. It has formed or revitalized many farmers groups and community based organizations (CBOs). In the process, many groups and individual farmers have been empowered. Nevertheless, LI-BIRD has also learnt the entire process from farmers and CBOs. LI-BIRD has established four different awards to facilitate innovative farmers and famers groups. Best Innovative Farmer AwardThe Innovative Farmer Award is an award initiated and established by LI-BIRD with financial support from Dr. S.B. Mathema, one of the advisory members of LI-BIRD. Crop varieties and animal breeds in farmer’s fields constitute a range of genetic diversity and are the fruits of thousands of years of observation, domestication, selection, exchange, and improvement by farmers and communities. Such efforts are not well recognized in the society. Dr. Bhuwon Ratna Sthapit and Ms. Rajya Shree Sthapit institutionalised the Farmer Breeder Award as their social responsibility to encourage such Nepali individuals in future . The purpose of the award is to encourage and strengthen farmers’ capacities for maximizing the selection of useful diversity from genetic resources conservation efforts. (More Detail)
