Agricultural Innovations for Livelihood Security

Programme Goal: To improve the livelihoods of our impact group through increased food security, nutrition and income.

The Agricultural Innovations for Livelihood Security programme develops and delivers new technologies to address the diverse needs of rural farmers for improved food security, nutrition and income. By employing a participatory approach in innovation development, we enhance farmers’ knowledge and skills and help them become agents of change.

Pathways for Change

Develop and promote technologies using participatory approaches. Our technology development and promotion approach is participatory and context specific. Therefore, this pathway will address the technical needs of rural farmers who have not been well served by the traditional one-size fits all approach that ignores their local needs and niche-specific farming context.

The key interventions in this pathway will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • It will focus on participatory and client-oriented breeding approaches to improve varieties with the traits that farmers need.
  • It will strengthen local institutions and seed systems to increase farmers’ access to both local and improved varieties with desirable traits in order to deploy them to a wide geographic area for the benefit of a large number of people.
  • It will promote development of local innovations to improve agricultural systems and increase farm incomes.

Promote integrated and ecologically resilient farming at the farm or household level. By diversifying production systems at the household or farm level, the programme will ensure year round food production, diversified diet as well as diverse farm-based income sources.

The key interventions in this pathway will include, but not be limited to, the following.

  • Promotion of integrated home gardens and biodiversity-rich mixed farming systems.
  • Incorporation of neglected and underutilized species into production systems.
  • Small-scale irrigation solutions such as kitchen wastewater use, rainwater harvesting, drip irrigation, renovation of community ponds, etc.

Promote commercial and income based farming. To make farming attractive and a viable option for a dignified life, there needs to be a route to commercial and income based farming. Therefore, this pathway will create agriculture-based income generating opportunities.

The key interventions in this pathway will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Leasehold farming to bring landless farmers into the commercial production system.
  • Promotion of selected high market value crops.
  • Strengthening linkages across the value chain and build value addition capacity.
  • Quality seed production.
